Salt reduction is a priority for the industry as part of its ongoing
efforts to reformulate products where technologically possible,
safe and acceptable to consumers. In September 2004, FDF
launched its Food and Health Manifesto, which emphasised our
members' commitment to continuing to reduce levels of sugar, fat
and salt in products, as well as providing lower salt, lower sugar
and lower fat options.
- A survey of our members conducted towards the end of 2005
found that 36% of products, worth £7.4bn in sales, had a
lower level of salt compared with the previous year, while
£2.4bn worth of products were lower salt variants of standard
lines.
- Our Food and Health Manifesto encourages members to include
information on salt equivalence on their labels alongside the
legally required sodium declaration. By the end of 2006, 59%
of our members' products surveyed had salt equivalence
information on pack.
- The new front of pack Guideline Daily Amount labels being
introduced by many manufacturers and retailers will make it even
easier for consumers to be aware of the salt content of the
products they are buying.
- Industry is committed to working with the Food Standards
Agency (FSA) towards its 2010 salt targets.
- We support the aim of FSA's salt information campaign to raise awareness among consumers of the importance of checking salt levels in food, and where appropriate, choosing the lower salt option.
